So, I moved to Atlanta. I started working for InsideOut. And, I still make videos that I think are funny. I hope you do too...but you don't have to agree...
I'm probably too busy for two posts in one day. But, technically this is tomorrow since I'm posting at 3 am. And, this Pat Robertson comment is SO awkwardly awesome it might actually be sinful to keep it too myself.
...except Pat Robertson has a nationally televised show.
I was inspired yesterday to make this poster after Pat Robertson called the earthquake in Haiti a "Blessing in Disguise" and blamed the earthquake on a deal that went south between ALL the people of Haiti and the Devil! Try to guess what my favorite part of his comments was.
"...you know, Christy, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it, they were under the heel of the French, uh, you know, Napoleon the third and whatever, and they got together and swore a pact to the Devil, they said, we will serve you, if you get us free from the Prince, true story. And so the Devil said, 'OK, it's a deal.'"
Still wondering my favorite part? The line, "Ok, it's a deal."
I'm not sure if the "deal" the people of Haiti made was meant explicitly to help them escape slavery or to just get rid of the French, but it is clear that the Devil is the most chill guy in world politics.
If you haven't heard, read, or seen Robertson's full comments check them out here:
So, long story very short, Pat Robertson is crazy and we all know it. He's crazy like Al Sharpton is crazy-- everybody knows it, but for some reason nobody will take his microphone away. But, because nobody will take his microphone away, all of Christianity wrongly looks dumb, because of one dumb Christian. This is unfair, but it's the real world people, deal with it.
How do we deal with it?
Yet again this is another one of those opportunities for us Christians to commit ourselves to becoming better listeners, healers, and doers of our faith rather than talkers. Let's show ourselves to be people who LIVE our FAITH, through donation and education.
I know that's not doing anything physically, but unless you're a trained emergency relief worker there's not much by way of action you can do yet. There will be more opportunities in the near future, but for now listening, giving, and learning (the real story) are all really powerful ministries that could go a long way to make up for the crazy comments our Christian grandparents say at the dinner table (and on national television).
Ok? Deal. (With You the reader, not the Devil.) -joejones
PS: Unless the Devil is reading my blog, and if you are, the deal still isn't with you.
Here's a couple wonderful quotes from the article:
"In 2006, the Academy Award for Best Song went to Three Six Mafia's "Its Hard Out Here for a Pimp", while many people cheered and felt that it was a great 'step forward' for hip-hop. It's difficult to believe that the Academy would've awarded an Oscar to a song called 'It's Hard Out Here for a Trafficker,' and not only because it would've made for a pretty awkward rhyme."
And...
"Frankly, it's hard out here for a 13-year-old girl who's under the control of an adult man who beats her daily, tattoos, brands, his name on her body to mark her as his property, who controls her every movement and forces her to have sex nightly with dozens of adult men and then takes her money. If that's not trafficking and slavery I don't know what is. I wish someone would make a song about her."
